An Adaptive Approach for Impulsive Formation Maintenance Relevant to Distributed SAR Missions

This paper proposes an approach for impulsive formation maintenance tailored to distributed synthetic aperture radar, i.e., a spaceborne system composed by several antennas working together provide enhanced remote sensing capabilities. The analyzed configuration is designed guarantee the presence of safety tube surrounding each satellite as dynamics evolve. Formation requirements are related general constraints on acceptable along-track and radial/cross-track separations. introduces adaptive logic which fulfills these constraints. Specifically, adaptively redesigned around chief every time geometry violated means procedure developed authors in previous works based relative orbit parameters. Once parameters defined, optimal burns required transfer computed using state-of-the-art approaches. Performance terms delta-v maneuver frequency two-spacecraft exploiting simulation environment MATLAB GMAT. In ideal conditions, it shown that costs limited, while close proximity requires fine sensitivity applied impulses. A first assessment impact navigation maneuvering execution errors indicates they play important role defining overall control effort.
